Leading for Innovation and Creativity Workshop

A Leading GM Workshop

Truly inspirational and a great kick up backside for those of us who too often seem to coast along in our comfort zones! Excellent techniques identified on how to engage with front line staff and get them thinking outside of “the box” – Leading for Innovation and Creativity Workshop delegate

On 22 September Rene Barrett facilitated a new Leading GM Workshop on Leading for Innovation and Creativity. Held at The Studio Manchester, Rene guided 20 GM leaders through a range of theories and techniques designed to inspire innovation and creativity in their work and organisations, thereby fostering an environment in which both innovation and creativity can flourish. This workshop not only explored theories, but also provided our GM leaders with the opportunity to test creative thinking techniques on real issues in GM. Through this activity, some really innovative ideas on how to respond to these challenges were identified.

The Beyond Budgeting principles

 “The purpose of the principles is to inspire and guide organisations as they strive to implement Beyond Budgeting; we refer to this as being on a Beyond Budgeting journey.”

We are delighted that one of our Leadership Programme delegates, Shaer Halewood, has shared this article and noted its relevance to the Leading GM programme.

Leading from Place Workshop 27 June

The first Leading from Place Workshop was held on 27 June and facilitated by Jeremy Cox from the Vanguard Consulting Group.14 leaders took part from a range of sectors and localities across GM including GM family, Health, Housing, and Local Authority.This workshop is designed to support the Place Based Integration initiative and emerging workforce priorities from the Early Adopter sites. It is also designed to help create a critical mass of place based leaders across Greater Manchester. The areas covered throughout the day strongly aligned with the developing three characteristics of a Place Leader (shown below):

3 characteristics of place leader

Rita Evans, Leading GM Programme Director, introduced the day and highlighted that the three characteristics are aligned to the GM Leadership Expectations, in particular leading from place.

The key focus of the workshop was helping GM leaders to make use of Systems Thinking methodology to design new ways of working based on a full understanding of presenting and contextual demand. This approach enables localities to identify situations where the current system creates waste or fails to get the best outcomes. It also enables them to design new approaches to tackling and removing those system conditions. The role of place-based locality leadership will be key to taking effective action in the system.

Attendees from this first Leading from Place Workshop have said:

Really helps to understand how our work issues are a product of the systems we have created. Really useful and thought-provoking course.

I found the session very useful, in that it gave me a good grounding in a number of different methods of system thinking, which I can now research further and implement within my own origination.

Insightful overview provided by knowledgeable and passionate speaker.

Immersion 2: Leading GM Leadership Programme

Following on from the first Immersion on 11 May, our second Leading GM Leadership Programme cohort regrouped on 22 June for their second Immersion event. Led by Mari Davis, Liz Goold, Joyce Redfearn, and Myron Rogers, the delegates continued to work through place based challenges with their GM colleagues. Ian Williamson (Chief Accountable Officer, Manchester Health and Care Commissioning) also joined us to open the day and share his story. Thoughts and learning that emerged throughout the day were captured by Paolo Feroleto, who created some fantastic images (available below). Through the two Immersion events, this second cohort of GM Leaders have identified some key issues in their place and developed tools and strategies to move forward.

As the second cohort continues moving through the Leading GM Leadership Programme, we are looking forward to their Reunion and Reflection event. To be held on 17 October, cohort 1 delegates are also invited to meet their colleagues on cohort 2 and share their learning and experiences. Cohort 1 and 2 Leadership Programme delegates can book their place here.

Leading GM Workshop: Leading for Innovation and Creativity

As part of our 2017/18 Leading GM Workshop series, we are pleased to announce the Leading for Innovation and Creativity Workshop, to be facilitated by Rene Barrett. This workshop will be held on 22 September.

There’s never been a time when innovation in the public sector has been more urgently needed.  As problems grow more complex, developing an innovation culture becomes increasingly important. There is a clear imperative to innovate in the public sector.

Do you have what it takes to inspire people to practice innovation? What kind of leadership is more likely to create an environment where innovation and creativity can flourish?

Our teams will determine the success or failure of getting innovation to the heart of the next generation of public services – harnessing their motivation will be a critical component of a new model of public sector innovation. This workshop will help you focus on and equip you to make this happen as a GM Leader, and is open to any leader in GM.

#LeadingGM Masterclass: Building and Sustaining High Performing Thriving Teams, Organisations and Places – Rene Barrett

It’s coming to the end of 2016 and we’re reflecting on our GM journey this year. We’ve seen some amazing masterclass covering a number of different facets of leadership, and have welcomed our first cohort into the #LeadingGM leadership programme.

For our final masterclass of 2016, we welcomed Rene Barrett, who gave us a fresh insight into how to lead most effectively in GM as we move into the new year. Rene explored resilience on a personal, team, and place level and led the group through a number of exercises aimed at gauging and improving their personal resilience. Resilient people make for happier and more productive leaders, teams, and places.

The GM Commissioning Academy

In conjunction with HM Cabinet Office a regional Commissioning Academy has been developed to help deliver a new wave of expert Commissioners to deliver on the promises of devolution where all partners in Greater Manchester (GM) need to find new ways of working together.

GM needs more than ever, effective commissioners able to deliver better outcomes for citizens and better value for money with ever tighter resources. Commissioners that will embrace new and innovative delivery models and build public services that better reflect the needs of their user.

As part of our GM Leadership framework, the local Academy will help commissioners from all public sector partners across the region to:-

  • Collaborate by ensuring they have a common understanding of commissioning, a common language and framework;
  • Build the relationships needed to enable integration under Greater Manchester’s Devolution Agreement;
  • Embed a mindset of “think GM”; act local; placed-based leadership;
  • Drive delivery of local devolution plans through the Commissioning Academy 100 Day Action Plans.

It will play a vital role in equipping capable, confident and courageous Commissioners, able to tackle the many challenges facing our public services to use all available resources for greatest benefits of our 2.8m citizens of GM.

Each programme comprises of 5 full day sessions to take place at local venues across the GM conurbation with a half day site visit to a partner organisation. Participants will be expected to attend all sessions of the programme within that cohort.

During the programme, participants will explore commissioning practices with a range of expert speakers including the programme’s strategic sponsor Rob Bellingham the GM Director of Commissioning who will set out the vison for Commissioning in GM and Carolyn Wilkins the Chief Executive from Oldham Council. There will also be a range of national and local guest speakers who will showcase a range of exemplar activities and case studies in support of commissioning for better outcomes.

Through local case studies, master classes and discussion, the focus of the programme is on peer-led learning, debate and practical implementation through the delivery of ‘100 day plans’ with cohort partners that focus on real and tangible transformation of services.
